Why Sand Volleyball Is Exploding — Trends, Scholarships, and How to Make the Switch

Beach volleyball isn’t just a summer hobby anymore. It’s one of the fastest-growing competitive sports in the U.S. and around the world — and for good reason. From record participation increases to new collegiate programs and Olympic spotlight moments, more athletes are discovering the unique challenge and culture of sand volleyball.

The Rise of Sand Volleyball

In the past decade, beach volleyball has moved from casual play to serious competition.

🌍 Participation Is Growing Rapidly

Girls’ beach volleyball participation nearly tripled between 2018 and 2022, according to national sports participation data — a surge linked to new collegiate teams and more youth opportunities.

📈 A College Sport on the Rise

Beach volleyball became an official NCAA championship sport in 2016, and since then participation has exploded. More than 90 colleges now sponsor beach volleyball teams, with well over 1,600 student-athletes competing by 2023 — up sharply from just a handful of programs a decade ago.

This growth is part of why the sport is capturing attention: it has one of the fastest participation increases among NCAA sports.

Beach Volleyball at the Olympics and Beyond

Beach volleyball ranks among the most watched sports at the Summer Olympics, thrilling fans worldwide with fast-paced play, spectacular digs, and dynamic rallies.

This visibility sparks interest at all levels — from youth players picking up a ball for the first time to seasoned indoor athletes considering a switch.

Scholarships: Beach vs. Indoor

One major question aspiring athletes ask is scholarships.

🏐 Indoor Volleyball Scholarships

Traditional indoor volleyball has a long history in college recruiting and more established scholarships because of the larger rosters and longer NCAA presence — meaning more players have long benefited from financial support.

🏖 Beach Volleyball Scholarships

Beach volleyball scholarships are more recent and structured differently. Because beach volleyball teams are smaller (two players on the court, coaching staff varies), the total number of scholarship spots at any given school tends to be fewer than for indoor volleyball. However, more programs are adding sand teams each year, and many schools offer partial or full scholarships, especially where no indoor team exists.

The trend is toward more opportunities as programs continue to grow, particularly at schools that value both indoor and beach squads.

How to Transition from Indoor to Beach Volleyball

Transitioning from indoor to sand is fun but strategically different — and the best players use this as a way to grow their skills.

Here are practical steps to help the switch:

🏃 1. Build Sand-Specific Fitness

Sand demands more leg strength and balance because you don’t get the same push-off you do on a hard court. Simple drills like sand sprints, shuffles, and jumps are foundational.

🧠 2. Master All Skills

In beach volleyball, every player must pass, set, attack, serve, and block — there are no specialized positions like libero or middle blocker. Practicing all aspects of the game builds versatility and confidence.

👟 3. Get Comfortable With the Sand

Getting used to the feel of movement in sand is key — run, shuffle, and jump casually on sand before training hard. This helps you adjust your footwork and balance efficiently.

🤝 4. Find or Build Partnerships

Beach is a two-person game, so chemistry matters. Practice regularly with partners who challenge you and communicate well on and off the court.

📅 5. Compete Often

Look for local sand leagues, tournaments, and camps. These give real game experience and can put you on the radar of coaches if you’re aiming for college play.

What This Growth Means for You

Sand volleyball isn’t just climbing in competitive numbers — it’s influencing how players train, how colleges recruit, and how younger athletes view their path in the sport.

Whether you want to:

  • play in college,
  • improve your overall volleyball skills,
  • find a new way to enjoy the sport you love,
  • or just get outside and move —

there’s never been a better time to embrace sand volleyball.
