Do You Know the History Behind Your Gear?

Surf- and Volleyball-Shaped Activewear
The clean, understated look you see in modern activewear didn’t come from fashion houses or trend cycles. It came from surf and volleyball culture—sports that demanded clothing that could move, stretch, and disappear once the action started.
Surfers needed warmth without bulk. Volleyball players needed freedom without restriction. Style followed function, not the other way around.
That philosophy is the foundation of Spike & Surf Co. Simple, flexible pieces designed to work wherever your day takes you—on the sand, in the sun, or off the court.
How Sport Changed Everyday Clothing
1950s–60s — Surfing & Neoprene
Surfers layered into neoprene to stay warm in cold water. Suddenly, seasons didn’t matter. Performance materials made longer sessions possible and shifted how athletes dressed for the environment.
1970s–80s — Volleyball & Spandex
Volleyball uniforms evolved with spandex, allowing players to jump, dive, and move without thinking about their gear. Comfort became invisible—and that was the goal.
Today — Minimalism, Everywhere
That same mindset lives on in pocket tees, crewnecks, and boxy silhouettes. At Spike & Surf Co., subtle colors and clean lines mean your clothes work just as well on the beach as they do in the city.

Why Minimal Design Isn’t a Trend for Us
Minimal design isn’t something we adopted—it’s something we inherited.
Our Garment-Dyed Pocket Tees and Crew Neck Sweatshirts are built with the same thinking behind the first wetsuits and early performance uniforms:
- Comfort over flash
- Flexibility over stiffness
- Focus on what actually matters
Where early surf gear was built strictly for function, our modern pieces strip things back even further—making them wearable anywhere, every day.
Carrying the Spirit of Motion Forward
Spike & Surf Co. was born from volleyball and surfing, and from the way those sports quietly shaped style for everyone else. Every heavyweight tee or comfort-color sweatshirt connects that heritage to how you move today.
If you love sport, the coast, and clothing that doesn’t try too hard—this is your lane.
